GreenHawks fall to Puerto Rico, 124-117

Box Score I Photos

Rockville, MD…When Puerto Rico comes into town, you know you are going to be in for a show. That’s exactly what the fans got Saturday evening and more as Elvis was in the building.

After playing Puerto Rico competitively during their first three meetings this season, the GreenHawks entered the game looking to pick up their first win over the Capitanes and their second win in as many nights.

Puerto Rico went up 5-1 early on but the GreenHawks went on a scoring surge, led by Ray Cunningham’s eight first quarter points and finished the first quarter with a 22-18 lead.

The second quarter belonged to Puerto Rico, as newly-signed Courtney Sims and Elias Ayuso combined for 20 points, outscoring the GreenHawks by 13 and entering halftime on top 57-48.

After the break, Puerto Rico continued their momentum, as David Cortes netted 16 of the Capitanes 42 points, which saw Puerto Rico extend their lead to as many as 24 points.

Puerto Rico held a 114-94 lead with 6:54 to go in the game, but Maryland would not go down without a fight. The GreenHawks went with a two point-guard lineup with Terrance Mouton and Joseph Flegler in the backcourt.

Maryland went on a 21-6 run over the next 5:35 with Mouton and Flegler combining 12 points during this time, cutting the lead to 120-115 with 1:19 remaining in the game.

That would be the closest the GreenHawks would get as Rafael Cruz scored the final four points of the game for Puerto Rico.

In the loss, the GreenHawks were led by Scooter Sherrill’s 24 points, 11 assists and seven rebounds. Byron Mouton finished with 19 points and seven rebounds and Joseph Flegler added 17 points, nine assists and seven rebounds.

The GreenHawks will return to action next week when they host the Vermont Frost Heaves on Friday night at Georgetown Prep and Saturday night at Gaithersburg High School. Both games will begin at 7PM.

GAME NOTES: It was GreenHawks owner Tom Doyle’s birthday recently and the nearly sold-out crowd were given party hats as they entered the game and were entertained at halftime with a special performance by “Elvis.”
